Hi Guys!

How is everyone coping so far with the year 2011? hahah. Hope everyone is having fun back at school!

As you guys know, Improvise III is coming up on the 27th of January, and to prepare you guys for the concert, we have arranged for more practices with wen for the month of Jan!

So posted below will be the schedule for all three bands with wen for the month of Jan. Besides these dates, Band ICs please arrange with your members to have your own practices.

THIS PRACTICES WITH WEN ARE NOT MEANT FOR YOU GUYS TO FIGURE THINGS OUT. ITS FOR HIM TO LISTEN TO YOU ALL PLAY AND WORK ON THE PIECES.

Attendance for the practices are compulsory. If anyone has any problems attending, please let your Band ICs know, and Band ICs please inform me as well.

You guys will receive the tickets soon, probably sometime this week or early next week. Each ticket will be priced at $8. Everyone is expected to sell at least 10 okay!

Hey guys and Band IC's,

On the 25th there's be a trial for your selected songs with wen. Each band will have 60mins with him for evaluation and brain storming session. Try your best to present the best that you can, given that you only have one practice before the 25th. But, you can always have extra practices, just let the key-holders(Exco) know.

Band IC's who have not sent me the list, please do ASAP! Dont make me call you people! HAHA

Improvise committee, we will be having a meeting after the session on the 25th. Attendance is compulsory!

Hi Guys,

Examinations
As you all know, the Exams will begin on the week of 30th Aug and end on the 17th of Sept. From now till the end of the Exams there will be no band practices. Make sure you guys study and stuff.

When examinations are over, practices will resume as usual. Band's 2 & 3 on Monday's and bands' 1 & 4 on Wednesdays. Saturday sessions will begin on the 25th of Sept and will alternate from there.

Saturday Sessions
Saturday's is where the instructors come down to identify and rectify our mistakes. I do notice that many members tend to come late for these sessions.
Firstly, you should be on time for all band sessions unless you have a valid reason.
Secondly, there is a lesson running, as such it is distracting and rude if you walk in midway into the lesson.

With this in mind there'll be a new standing order, If you know you're late and can only reach school past the 1st hour of the session commencing, please remain at home or wherever you are unless you have a valid reason.

Its not that I hate you guys or anything(LOL), its just that I feel its not acceptable if you come for band later than that. You'll be marked absent for that day if you do not have a valid reason. Do note that you guys actually have an hour of grace time.

Improvise is up for planning now. Band ICs who have yet to pass me their list PLEASE do so asap alright?

Procedures will follow this way;
-List given (Please choose about 5-6 per band)
-Play the pieces, if its fine we'll go ahead with it, if not you should have back ups. From the list of 5 we'll actually choose 4 only. Or maybe 5 if we know that you have short pieces.

Gear up alright?! I feel that this "new" concert format will be pretty cool!

Hi guys,

Here are some updates for everyone!

Firstly, the next few practices that we will be having with the instructors will be on:

24th July

7th August and 21st August

Please let your ICs or Yan Tze know if you are unable to come for any of these practices or if you are going to be late.

This brings me to my second point, which is punctuality and attendance. Despite our efforts to get everyone to come on time for practice, especially for saturday's practices, many of you guys are still not making the effort to come on time. Please be reminded that we are, and will be taking attendances for every practice that we have, and that failure to commit to 75% of the practices that we hold will result in the disqualification of your CCA points for the year. (Late without a valid reason will be considered as absent) Please also try and understand the rationale behind our efforts to get practice to start on time. If the situation does not improve, we will be forced to put in place measures such as fines/duties system, which is really quite childish and unnecessary.

Do note that reasons such as oversleeping are not considered valid reasons, and although we have tolerated them for some time, action will be taken on individuals who repeatedly report late due to the reasons mentioned above.

Thirdly, the recordings done last saturday of the bands who were present will be uploaded soon to allow you guys to listen to your performance and to judge yourself. Those who did not attend practice can also listen to these recordings to get an idea of how the standard was like at the practice. In the future, we will try to record and upload the bands' playing every week, so that you guys can compare and check your progress.

If you guys have any suggestion/feedback for the us regarding anything to do with the club, such as management etc. please do not hesitate to contact us and let us know. If you would like to know the rationale behind any of our activities or measures that we put in place, feel free to approach us as well.

School re-opens this coming Monday :(.

Trainings will resume as per normal. Band 2&3 on Mondays, 1&4 on Wednesday's. Monday training starts from 1800h and should end by 2100h. Wednesday trainings start from 1530h and should end by 1830h.

For the first section: June Camp

For those of you who are still unsure, the Jazz Band June Camp will be held next week, 22nd - 24th of June @ SP. This is a compulsory camp. Failure to attend it without any valid reasons will result in consequences during your probationary review. If you have not reported your attendance to your Band ICs please do so ASAP as we have to plan for your food and accommodation. So far, the list of attendees are:

For this camp, please bring along $20 for the food that we will be providing. For all three days in camp, lunch and dinner will be provided. (Besides first day, only dinner) Please bring bread or something for breakfast if you do not want to eat school food!

Please also download the indemnity form attached below, and the camp brief, which contains the packing list. The indemnity form is VERY VERY IMPORTANT. You must hand it in before the camp starts on the 22nd, or you will be barred from the camp itself. For the 2nd part of the post, some updates.

For the previously mentioned Vanda Room gig, after further discussion and planning, it has been determined that the project should be shelved for the time being, with the possibility of it being held sometime towards the end of the year. More updates will be given when things are more confirmed. Reasons for shelving the project are:

1. Bad timing, YOG period means that many staff who are involved in YOG will not be able to attend.

2. Newly formed groups under Wen and Andrew will not have enough time to prepare for the gig.

Also, the next time the instructors will be coming down will probably be on the first saturday of July. All Band ICs please ensure that your bands are ready for that practice. All bands are expected to at least be able to play through all the songs without major glitches and without discussion before playing. Please do all arrangements BEFORE the practice. For those who are attending the camp, do use the free time wisely and get as much practice as you guys can.

Matthew mentioned in the previous post that all future announced here. Do make sure that you guys keep a frequent tab on the blog to catch any updates. Some stuff to look out for will be a calendar system that will provide information on events happening our clubroom, be it practices or jam sessions. Not checking blog will not be a reason tolerated should you fail to receive any messages that we post here in the future.

Hi guys!

Hope that the exams went well for everyone, for those who took exams! I'm sure everyone is feeling so bored now that the long holiday is here! (except deborah who is like halfway around the world, oh and Matthew -.-) So I'm here to update you guys on some of your favorite past times! JAMMING. Yes thats right, holiday practices! Just to keep you guys in the know, for the new academic of 2010/2011, Jazz band practices will be changed to every Monday and Wednesday, time to be confirmed. Both practices will be for everyone until the freshies come in. Please be sure to make it for at least 75% of the practices or you will not be entitled to the CCA points for the entire year, and will be dismissed from the band - Matthew from China.

Hi guys,

We got a performance for the parent-school exchange thingy again this year on the 26th Sept, Saturday, followed by an mid-Autumn festival thing in the evening that day. For this performance, I'm opening it to all current members and alumni who wish to come and perform (sry kat..) The exchange thingy is a planned set, the evening will be more of a Jamming session. Alumni that we may not know of may come in to play during the event. No idea what instruments they play either.

There'll be an AGM on monday (annual general meeting) 2nd march at 1pm. Everyone do make a point to come as its really important. We'll be discussing on WHATEVER you can think of for the coming year. This will last all the way until night time, including (whats below).

Also on that day, we're MOVING HOUSE! yes... moving out, then back in. Which means spring cleaning. I'm trying to do the spring cleaning WHILE ITS STILL SPRING, so we cant wait anymore. ok jokes aside.. Pls do not wear white, clean, dirtiable clothes on monday. Any1 got vacuum cleaner? Do bring old clothes or unusable clothes too, and anything you can think of to help the process.

These are the job scope of the committee:
Ticketing officer - Tickets production including ticket printing, ticket numbering and keeping track of ticket sales. Few words, Much Work.

Marketing Executive - Make plans to aid in ticket sales and also make designs for tickets, posters. Basically the advertising part. Few words, Much Work.

Sound Engineer - Do the sound system for recording during rehearsals and also the performance itself. Arvin do learn from Raymond so you can do it by yourself as Raymond will probably be busy with librarian work on top of 3rd yr school work.

Food I.C. - Originally to ensure supply of food for GOH reception and members. However, I think we won't be needing that... so...

Logistics Manager - Ensure items are available for use when the band needs it, items such as music stands, chairs, cables etc. You are to do up an inventory list which can be an improved and more detailed version of the previous inclusive of indication on working condition and whether it belongs to Mr. Yee. Also to do up a checklist of equipments we will use for the concert to be of use on concert day.

Then we have a list of names and email addresses and phone numbers... which i don't think i shud put up on the blog... privacy privacy... so i'll just give mine so you can contact me for it.

Alumnis and Year 3 seniors will be the advisors for the committee. So seniors, do point anything out if you see a problem. You'll be a great help.

Please do inform ME ie VINCENT for Big Band and also to SHI CHUN for Combo Band if you are coming late for practice or are unable to attend practice EARLY. At least by noon of that day itself. Pls also state WHY you are unable to make it. Esp Nami and Arvin who come late regularly and Keith and Anisah for not turning up regularly.

Do take note that practices has long been back to 5pm to 9pm time slots. 5pm to 5.30 is when you warm up by yourselves and get yourself ready for practice. 7pm to 8pm is dinner as a band.

Oh Ya. Please help suggest a concert title thx.

End of Year CONCERT

Hi guys!

We had a meeting after rehearsal today in the band room regarding the end of year concert. Here are our meeting notes:

3 September 2008
6.42pm - 7.52pm : 1hr 10mins

Date - 5 December 2008
Venue - Auditorium

We're confirming the mercenaries from symphonic band for the Big Band by next Tuesday so next Wednesday we'll start practice with them. So next Wednesday we'll do all the sight-reading and also try to confirm repertoire by the Wednesday the week after. Here are the dates:

10 sept - 1st practice in Big Band
17 sept - Confirmation of pieces

We have decided to change our practice schedules to cater for the Big Band and also for the development of the Jazz Band's juniors.

Mondays - 5pm to 9pm for Junior Band year 1s and year 2s
Wednesdays - 3pm to 5pm for Big Band, 6pm to 8pm for Senior Band year 2s and 3s

Year 1s pls do note that on Monday practices there will be no seniors to play for you so you gotta play your instruments, including doing your improvisations. As a personal comment, I feel that you guys improving way too slowly. Pls do realise that we have a reputation to hold and you guys as the future of the band will have to uphold it.

Here's what you can do to improve on your improvisation:
1 - Do not push your solos to other people but instead, SNATCH THEIRS!
2 - Know your instruments well first by playing your instruments ALOT.
3 - two choices.
....1)listen to alot different of jazz music .
....2)listen to few jazz music alot of times over.
4 - Repeat the above 3
5 - Repeat (4)
6 - Repeat (5)
and so on...

Practice hours in the jazz band is not enough for you to achieve that. The solutions are either to join other bands (even non jazz related), or practice diligently at home. There are no other ways around it.

first things first.. after the exams, band practice will resume, on the first Monday of September! which is 1/9/08. party on, dancing in september!

Hello! Haven't posted in a long time...... Our Saturday performance went pretty well, so try and keep up your practisin even during exam time. Here's what I think of our songs

Fly Me to the Moon
-Went smoothly, and everyone seems sure of their parts (the audi performance solos were in bossa.....but nvm don't think anyone noticed anything funny).
-Got positive reactions (haha) from both audiences so we can play it if we need some popular song everyone's heard of

Total: 8/10

Autumn Leaves
-Wow it suddenly became such an emo song!
-But that's still nice!
-But....we need to agree on what our intro is going to be like
-Cos it was kinda messy

Total: 6/10

Summertime
-Is it me or does the solo sound a whole lot nicer in the auditorium than in the band room?
-Great acoustics but lousy sound ><
-Maybe from now on let's be Amirs and don't let anyone else do our sound?
-Can't find much wrong but maybe can be a bit faster?

Total: 7/10

Tequila
-Everyone's fav song!
-Well....it's my fav song =)
-We didn't make them start dancing like the old folks' home but at least they clapped
-Young people are so unenergetic these days....must be cos of too much work and exams -_-;;;

and on another note,
well. as the exams are drawing near *oh noes!* the jazz band will be "suspended" for exam break. the room will however (tried to) be opened at request.
it is very important to play your instrument once in a while even during the exam period, as not to lose touch from it.
just a little personal experience.. last sem when i went thru the exams i didnt play for nearly 3 weeks to a month. i was level 34 at that time, then after not playing i slid down to level 8 only.. and took a very long time to recover.. yeah so...

hm. better look at the scores, and look for stuff to train and at least get an idea on improvisations okay? u know who u are.

a good website to start with is yeah u can go and see. alot of useful stuff.

Attendance has been pretty regular for many, but not all. Please do try to free practice times and set it aside any distractions. Get your priorities right.
That means no excuses like "gotta choing presentation/assignment" or "i already planned something else that day", esp the 2nd one ie, and esp if your presentation is not on the next day exactly. If your gonna say that, please say your "something else" and time of it and if your will make it late or need to go back earlier, to avoid misunderstandings.

The new practice schedule is announced!
Monday: Big Band - consisting of all members inclusive of year 1s
Wednesday: Combo Band - consisting of senior band (year 1s are welcome to join)

During combo band sessions, we'll be doing alot more soloing, so year 1s who are interested, please do your research on jazz solos and also listen to more jazz. Make the Wednesday sessions as your platform for trying out soloing.

so hello again..

12.05 am, and nearly the end of the jazz band camp..
well the first half of the band is prolly falling asleep in the dance studio and as im typing here.. hee. and the half is at the jazz band room, sitting outside the band room for supper and a few of them singing karaoke with mr yee in the band room.. haha!

well, what we did today is basically doing the second part of our workshops, and raf conducted a latin workshop for everyone the afternoon.. lols
ah, and a little section for independant learning (implementing the " teach less, learn more" concept in singapore education? =X) yeah and it went okay, i hope..

hopefully pics will be developed asap so i can post them up.. ehehhehee..

Hope everyone's enjoying their holiday so far, cos we have an even more fun event coming up: Band camp!

For those of you who haven't been to a camp before, here's a list of stuff to bring:

-2-3 sets of clothes
-toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, towels, etc)
-medication, if u need
-sleeping bag
-teddy bear (polar bears will be provided)
-some money
-handphone
-some form of entertainment (DS, laptop, homework. you can bring PS3 with your own TV if u want)

-yourself

What NOT to bring:
-Friends from outside (we don't have enough space)
-Ants (let's try not to make a big mess)
-weapons/firearms
-alcohol, cigs, drugs, etc. we'll get banned by the SAA admins if we do..

School's starting tomorrow! These 2 months have been a struggle to get through both for year 3s ITP seniors as well as the TOTALLY BORED OUT year 2s!

Year 1s coming in pretty soon, so let's BUCK UP on our own playing and show them a good example!

If we are going as a group I would like to start collecting money so we can get all the tickets in one go. So, whoever's going please try to bring $10 ASAP...maybe tomorrow if anyone's reading this now? If not then I'll collect on Mon or Wed.

Blog entries hav been abit long, so if i do that i'd be busting my free msg quota every quickly... I'll just msg everyone to remind every1 to read blog frequently.

Other comments:
I wan talk bout responsibility.

To me, responsibility is the feeling of guilt making me want to complete a job. For example like "if i dun do my inventory list, i'll be seen as *lazy* to u guys and i'll lose Ning's trust". This thought makes me want to do my job wholeheartedly, quickly and efficiently. I feel that this thinking is more important than like "if i dun do this Amir is gonna scold" or such.

But when its something simple like keeping stands after practice, theres no guilt wadsoever. SO DOES THAT MEAN NO NEED TO DO IT? This just means that its not responsibility that we'r after but instead CONSIDERATION.

DO KNOW that when we leave stands and amplifiers standing around, we'r blocking everyone's ways. Esp the drummers since raf comes back often to teach them tuning drums and amir does tat as well. I MEAN WHATS SO DIFFICULT ABOUT MOVING THEM AWAY?

BUT ON THE OTHER SIDE, if some of us forget to do so, can't we just forget about blaming ppl and just help them keep? Dun forget those tuning drums will also block everyone's path too, exp when the drums ARE bigger than stands and do that up more space. NOTICE NO 1 EVER GETS ANGRY AT DRUMMERS FOR THIS REASON.

hello

things have been going on lately, good n bad (mostly). i hope the talk today have brought us closer together to working together, to help each other n making the jazz band a success.

ppl grew up in different background, different ways of being brought up, different genes... thus everybody is different, looks, opinions etc.. however, our aims can be the same since we're all in one band. to avoid conflicts with each other, try to be more understanding n take time listen out to each other n share opinions. however, make sure opinions r taken into consideration n not for granted.

punctuality have always been a problem in singapore. even i have this problem but i m really working hard on it. at least i do take the effort to inform that i'm late or i can't come n why.

i know inbetween practices someone might have the itch to make some sound from their instruments for practicing or whatever. in my opinion, how i feel is that is that not totally no sound. if u want make sound, make sure it is soft n only u can hear but if someone is talking to u, the basic courtesy is to stop what u'r doing n listen. a simple respect for the speaker.

how i feel about each practice is that we didn't really do much. we should really focus more n make each of our practices more efficient n effective. remember to voice out ur opinions. our playing is in a mess. we're not playing together, quite messy actually... any way to improve on that?

i really do hope after today there's an improvement in everyone in regards of discipline, including me.

i'm the secretary (i always have the thinking that secretary r girls... pfft... >_<). i don't know how i m involved in welfare of members LOL but anyway, got problems or seek advices can find me, i don't give craps :p. love, friends, family n such. even if i can't help, i can always listen.

n also, i would like to thank Raf n Leila for voicing out their opinions n Amir for taking the opinions positively.

hope things change for the better.

Hey guys... PERFORMANCE ON WEDNESDAY!!! so we only have 1 last practice for the concert which is tomorrow. I hope all will turn up so we can do our final adjustments.... and so... here are my *last words?*

Our band polo Tee WILL BE READY by Tuesday so we should be able to wear it for the concert. It will cost $18 per shirt due cos we ordered in small quantity. The front SP JAZZ BAND logo is embroided(Thread and needle?) and back is printed on a quite gd quality polo tee...cool?

Not much complains for the music part
Nami pls get the sugar solos right tml's the last day to do it. And be a solo vocalist, not a singer *note the diff* (vocalist=bassist=clarinetist blar blar but singer/=/bassist=clarinetist) figure out urself... and pls see doctor

Some suggestions for after this concert:
We've already worked for the concert so our repertoire is kinda stable for coming gigs and performances. Can we go back to 2 pracs weekly cos 3 pracs is really a toll for many of us i think...

During CCA drives we cant always be performing live so mayb we can record more during practices and when we'r not playing in CCA drive we can playback and blast back at rockclimbers? lol...

Most importantly for tml's practice... pls come with a positive and looking-forward attitude so we'll all enjoy our last practice like we always does!

Joke: Firdaus in Justice League! He moves in superhuman speed(i mean tempo) and is known to all as "THE FLASH"... i mean... "THE FLESH?"...

We wouldnt hav done tat well w/o our past mth of hard work ya? just for a flashback of our playing last mth, i uploaded our recording from then.

How: performing 2-3 songs in 8 minutes: Fly Me To The Moon, A Day In The Life Of A Fool
Attire: Formal: Black? shirt+tie+black bottoms for guys, dress for gals(not jessica pls)

rehearsal report time: 4pm @ Jazz Room. run thru songs, settle everything (including dinner?)

let's make this a good one for the reputation of our band!

oh, and good practice today guys, keep it up =) we cleared alot of mistakes and we'd better remember them and not makin the same mistakes over and over! (me including)

one more thing! i need someone to go shopping with me.. Band World and Accent.. sat 1-3 before the rehearsal? hmm. i need 2 more company's quotations ASAP! oh. and adam was saying that nut needs sth for the drums. pls tell me! any one else also.. so i can send for quotations.

btw, we're workin ard a budget.. so cannot buy so many things.. compromise compromise...

ok... here are my comments for yesterday's prac.

Hey practice yesterday was very fun! As namie said we even forgotten bout dinner time whilst practicing, which is a GOOD thing! I remember the daes where we would get bored in practice and Mr yee would fall asleep halfway through a song... YEA! We should keep holding up the excitement in practices ya?

Playing wise guess we're all getting more stable... esp with Leonard consistantly practicing and Raf's guidiance. Namie's trombone playing's improving alot too! She even asked me to open the band rm door for her to practice just awhile ago(1.23pm =P) Seems like everyone's working their best for the upcoming concert! =D

We can see who're our stable members very obviously now too! Our attendances are pretty consistant these daes! (not including yr3s who have FYP and immense project works) Firdaus playing for concert? Haven been seeing him lately...

And YA!... pls do remember that there'll be practices on thurs so here's the schedule for the week:

hey guys~

in view of the upcoming e MST week, band practice for monday and wednesday has been sightly altered as follows:

report at 5 for warm up and we will start at 5.30, as usual, for the same 2 hours.
at 7.30, there will be a 10 min waterbreak/whatever.. then one more hour of band prac till 8.40. from then on you are dismissed, u can go for dinner or revise at home for your tests..

oh. and since 22 dec cannot have concert, i think its sensible to move the date as close to the 22 as possible. nearest is at 14 dec so i think will be confirmed..

hm. so.. we need a concert name and poster design..
